Pungent, sweet, and alcoholic, Old Nick's is a complex nose that is more akin to port wine than beer; cloudy, nearly opaque, a muted maroon-brick red in color; despite the mere wisp of a head this is a well carbonated, attractive brew. The nose is highly suggestive of the taste; this brew is delight to ponder in it's complexity. Initially very sweet tasting, the malt provides stability from which the winey strength, fruit and mustiness emerge. As expected of a barley wine the mouthfeel of Old Nick is quite heavy, almost syrupy in it's consistency; extremely smooth, with a mild bite at the back of the tongue right before it goes down. Old Nick's is a satisfying barley wine, ideal for the winter months, which is the only time the venerable Ram Brewery offers Old Nick; this is a seasonal not to miss. The taste develops more fully as this ale warms; best served at 50-55 degrees, and in a brandy snifter. |
