Surprisingly rich nose, malty, almost honey sweet smelling with a dainty touch of chocolate; healthy, cream colored head and very clear, light reddish-brown colored body, with mild visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass. Caramel, chocolate and toasted nuttiness, with a whiff of smoky malt, dominate the palate of this sweet tasting brown ale; the presence of hops are minimal. While the roasted malt is initially pleasing it becomes less so further down the glass, making for a nice start but make for a finish that is tolerably pleasant, but tends toward the sour end of the pool, and is rather unimaginative. Irish Brown is a mediocre beer that attempts to bridge the gap between the ubiquitous bland American lagers and ambers and more complex, heavier ales. Without having tasting better brown ales, this ale might not seem as pedestrian as it does. One wonders just how long the big three can keep pawning beers like this off on consumers in the guise of being microbrewed; George Killian's is actually brewed by Coors.
