Anchor Steam
A uniquely American invention, California common beer, formerly known as Steam beer, was popular on the west coast during the nineteenth century. Like its predecessors, Anchor Steam is a cross between an ale and a lager, possessing a healthy amber glow and a generous, creamy head. Shares the refreshing, hoppy bitterness of a lager while also being very much an ale with its medium-bodied feel, and full toasted malt flavor. Unfortunately, while the overall taste of Anchor Steam is interesting, it leaves something to desired, especially in its opinionated finish. It is, however, a solid, well-made beer, and definitely a cut above most beer brewed in America by commercial breweries.
