Beer Lovers

A review of Bob Kliens pocket guide to rated beers.

Bob Klein
Workman Publishing, 1995

An authoritative, well-informed, and much needed practical pocket guide that rates over 1,200 beers from around the world, and lists microbreweries and brewpubs in the United States. Bob Klein both an experienced beer judge and beer writer provides a clear and concise introduction to the bewildering world of beers in his introduction, discussing different beer styles, lingo and brewing techniques, and includes sections on how to judge and evaluate beer.

A major focus of this well written guide book is providing interesting suggestions for pairing food with beer, which is currently a growing trend in this country. Unfortunately at times Klein seems far too concerned with pairing food and beer, and in someinstances seems to gloss over a beer's characteristics and proceed right to discussing a suitable food; as a serious beer drinker I'd prefer to know more about a beer than to know that it's best with a chicken salad sandwich. This aside however The Beer Lover's Rating Guide provides a wealth of information and is a must have for every beer aficionado's library.
