Skin Deep

A BarAmerica original movie review of Skin Deep starring John Ritter.

Skin Deep

(1989) John Ritter
Directed and Scripted by Blake Edwards

John Ritter is Zach, a renowned writer whose life gets turned inside-out after his wife divorces him for his philandering ways. Zach goes through a long series of meaningless relationships and one-night stands, and drinking like a fish all the while until alcohol becomes the center of his life. Hitting bottom, confused, depressed, impotent, and unable to write, he becomes suicidal, until he finally comes to realize that the only thing standing in the way of his own happiness is himself. Ritter is perfectly cast as the irreverent b_mus_i playboy writer, delivering his best dramatic performance, as funny as it is affecting. One of Blake Edwards' more delightfully perverse films, Skin Deep is thoroughly entertaining, containing some memorable film moments.
