Strange Brew
A BarAmerica movie review of Strange Brew.
(1983) Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas
Directed by Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas
The king of all beer movies, Strange Brew is a wild ride down a very offbeat but hilarious path. Bob and Doug Mckenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas), two men with a low intelligence and high tolerance, end up working in a haunted brewery where they get caught up in a murderous plot of evil brew masters, mind controlled mental patiants and a damsel in distress. What more could you want in a movie? Beer you say?
Bob and Doug drink their way through the adventure whose Canadian setting and subsequent writing lead to a slew of catch phrases like "Take off hoser!" and "Beauty eh?" that dug into mid-eighties culture. The popularity of the characters lead to the current beer blast from the past, as both Bob and Doug Mckenzie have recently been resurected in new Molsen Golden commercials.
Strange Brew is enjoyable from first gulp to last sip and gets high marks for its pure devotion to one of BarAmerica's favorite subjects, beer. Don't watch this one without at least a six pack of your favorite near buy.
