Trees Lounge

A BarAmerica movie review of Trees Lounge starring Steve Buscemi.

Trees Lounge

(1996) Steve Buscemi, Carol Kane, Debi Mazar
Directed and Scripted by Steve Buscemi

Steve Buscemi plays Tommy, an amateur drunk and auto-mechanic who can't even get his own car to run, much less anything else in his life. Recently divorced and chronically unemployed, Tommy spends most of his time drifting in and out of bars.

Trees Lounge is a well-mixed black comedy cocktail, equal parts amusing bar room antics and sober consequences. As Tommy's world begins to crumble under the weight of his ambiguous moral choices, he becomes a pathetic, almost tragic figure. A strikingly real portrait, powerful and affecting. Buscemi gets high marks for this his directorial debut.
