The Ginger Man
A BarAmerica Showcase on the Ginger Man bar in New York City.
The City of New York is a maze of steel canyons riddled with thousands of bars that serve beer, hundreds of bars with good beer but only a handful are truly great beer bars.
The Ginger Man is one of those select few that can be honestly called a great beer bar.
The one, two and three punch of this bar is the over 65 tapped quality beers. Upon entering the front door away from the heat of the street you will see a oasis of gimmering taps stretched behind the bar. The image has brought more than a few tears to BarAmerica staffers. As you get closer, you start to make out familiar taps, a Rogue here, a Brooklyn there, a good old Sam staring right back at you.
You slowly walk the length of this sixty foot bar and eye each and every tap. The friendly bartenders smile at your awe. They have seen it before, the look of a beer lover in a land of fabulous beer. They smile as if to say "welcome, take your time, enjoy all that we have to offer." A viking would call this place Valhalla.
If you can tear your eyes away from the site of all those lovely taps, you will notice that the Ginger Man is not like most other beer bars. The lighting is dim and intimate, the furniture, a mixture of wooden tables, booths and couches all seem to show no signs of wear. There is even art on the walls, as if the sight of over sixty taps were not art enough. The decor, mostly in stained wood is both relaxing and friendly, a combination that is just right for a bar of this calaber.
The Ginger Man will serve up some food, right there at the bar, a decent fair of sandwiches and soups, pretty pubby but appropriate and enjoyable. The juke box is connected to a Bose stereo system with speakers hidden all over the bar that allows for the music to penetrate every corner.
If you were strong enough to make it past the bar and headed towards the back of the bar you will find one of the better parts to enjoy your brew, the lounge. It consists of three sets of couches and puffy chairs set up in "livingroom" manor. Sit back, take another sip of that brew and peruse the menu for you next victom, there is no time like the present and no bar like the Ginger Man.
